Chicas Poderosas

Chicas Poderosas is a global community that ignites change by inspiring and developing women in media and creating opportunities for all voices to be heard.

Chicas Poderosas offers professional training to provide women in media with the concrete skills to take their media career to the next level, boost entrepreneurial projects and push forward female leadership in journalism.

Chicas Poderosas believes in a world of informed and equal societies where all voices are heard. We have an engaged and talented network of 5500 women across 18 countries creating content to transform the existing narrative ensuring that women-focused storytelling and editorial workflows affect how we report our world.

Mariana Santos

Founder and CEO

Mariana Santos is a visual storyteller, who did groundbreaking work as a member of the interactive team at The Guardian in London. She leads design thinking workshops to increase multidisciplinary approach to storytelling, and she is a leader in community transformation. Leader of Chicas Poderosas together with a team of female leaders in different industries.

Gia Castello

Project manager

Gia is a Creative Technologist based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Gia has a degree on Media and Entertainment Management and has a career focused on developing new platforms to tell stories. Nowadays, she is Program Manager for Chicas Poderosas Global for their Mediathons, . She is also part of Chicas Programando, a community of women developers in Argentina. She has been a fellow for Genero e Numero in Brazil and has a scholarship from the National Fine Arts fund of Argentina for developing her first art installation named Low Poly Heart.

Diana Assennato

Social media director

Co-founder of ADA.vc, journalist, entrepreneur and Master of Digital Media from Goldsmiths University of London. I was elected the most innovative communication and marketing professional in Brazil by PróXXima magazine. I worked for more than 10 years with communication on different platforms such as cinema, television, newspapers, data visualization and magazines, but I discovered my passion for using technology to create and tell good stories in the Internet.

Camila Silva

Head of diversity

Camila is an avid traveler, multimedia reporter, humanitarian specialist and story-teller for under-represented communities all over the world with a decade of experience at Globo - the biggest Latin America broadcast Company. Focused on data-driven stories about social issues - women's leadership, inclusion, diversity & entrepreneurship, she runs the audiovisual Brazilian company WeTwo Producers and also is the Lead for Inclusion and Diversity at Chicas Poderosas with a focus on new technologies and education.

Gabriela Allegro

Listening director

Gaby is an international awarded journalist who has worked for 25 years at the biggest publishing groups in Brazil. She is a storyteller, a producer and a content manager in multiple platforms. Gabriela practices and investigate listening processes in communication. Her goal in life is to see listening incorporated in schools and communication projects, newsrooms and other organizations or systems where information can be used to transform intolerable realities.

Nuala Lawlor is a communications graduate-turned-Canadian diplomat with more than 18 years' experience managing public affairs, developing strategic content and advocating for foreign policy priorities with Global Affairs Canada. She has a career focus on Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa with previous assignments in Venezuela, Sudan, Ghana, Peru and South Africa. Nuala recently enjoyed a sabbatical from government to collaborate with the amazing Chicas Poderosas team and their mission to train and mentor female storytellers towards increasing innovative, women-rights focussed reporting in Latin America.

Mediathons

A MediaThon is a hack-a-thon for media makers. Over two days, Chicas brings together a talented array of storytellers - from journalists and designers, to coders and technologists - to create and collaborate, developing innovative original content around a specific theme. Boundaries are challenged and networks are expanded. The objective is to disrupt the status quo, inspire new perspectives and promote media that educates on underrepresented issues, changing the narrative and making new headlines.

New Ventures Lab

The New Ventures Lab (NVL) is a 20-week accelerator for independent, women-led media outlets in Latin America. The NVL provides mentorship and training for female media entrepreneurs to build sustainable business models while developing their leadership skills. Previous NVL teams are transforming the Latin American media landscape, generating positive social impact and creating new female-driven leadership models.
